the music of cat stevens

Although my dad would often sing the lyrics of “Cat’s Cradle“† to me as I was falling asleep as a boy, I don’t think I paid much attention to his other music until the week after Dante was born. The hospital where I was staying while the doctors were running tests had a small music library, including came across a few records in the library. I suppose that’s pretty late for someone as music-obsessed as myself, but I was turned off by his well-publicized conversion to Islam and subequent departure from music. Nevertheless, I find his music very inspiring, particularly such classics as “Father and Son”, “Moonshadow”, and “I love my dog”. These slipped back in to my music playlist again last week after the passing of my beloved dog Sandy at the ripe old age of 17. I’m thankful for the dogs and Cats in my life.

† doh! “Cat’s in the Cradle” is actually a song by Harry Chapin, as well as a wonderful book by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. Hope I didn’t confuse you cats out there.
